BBcode Tutorial

BBCode is a special implementation of HTML. Whether
you can use BBCode is determined by the administrator.
You can also disable it on a per post basis from the
posting form. BBCode itself is similar in style to
HTML: tags are enclosed in the square braces [ and ]
rather than in < and > and it offers greater control
over what is displayed and how it is displayed. For
more information on BBCode see the guide that can be
accessed from the Board posting page.

How do I provide bold, underlined or italic text?
BBCode uses tags, which permit you to change the
appearance of your text quite simply. This happens as

In order to make a text bold, enclose it with [ b][/b], for example:

{b} your text {/b}

your text

To underline, use ; for example:

{u} your text {/u}

your text

In order to write italics use ; for example:

{i} your text {/i}

your text

In order to write a text in a certain colour, enclose
it with . You can choose a general
colour name (for example red, blue, yellow.....). For
example, in order to write a red text, you would write
the following:

{color=blue} your text{/color}

your text

Changing the text size is done similarly, to do this
use [size=][/size]. Usually the text size is entered
as a numerical value.

{size=14} your text {/size}

your text

You can naturally combine different things, for

{size=20}{color=blue}{b} your text

your text

Here is an example of how to show images in posts:

The first of the following examples uses the
tag; whatever you type after the = sign
will cause the contents of that tag to act as a URL.
For example, to link to you could use:

This would generate the following link:
Visit phpBB!

You will notice that the link opens in a new window so
the user can continue browsing the forums if they
If you want the URL itself displayed as the link you
can do this by simply using:

The same thing applies to email addresses; you can
either specify an address explicitly, like:

which will output
or you can just type into your
message and it will be automatically converted when
you view the message.

As with all the BBCode tags, you can wrap URLs around
any of the other tags such as [img] (see next entry),
, etc. As with the formatting tags, it is up to you
to ensure that the correct open and close order is

Creating an Un-ordered list

BBCode supports two types of lists, unordered and ordered. They are essentially the same as their HTML equivalents. An unordered list ouputs each item in your list sequentially one after the other indenting each with a bullet character. To create an unordered list you use
and define each item within the list using
